What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files sent by a web server and stored on the user's computer (usually on the hard drive). The default parameters for cookies allow the information they contain to be read only by the server that created them. Cookies are most commonly used for counters, surveys, online shops, sites requiring a login, advertising and to monitor visitor activity.
The cookie mechanism was invented by former Netscape Communications employee Lou Montulli.
Application
Cookies can contain various types of information about a user of a website and the "history" of their communication with the website (or rather the server). They are usually used to allow the server to automatically recognise a particular user so that it can generate a dedicated page for that user. This makes it possible to create personalised websites, login support, "shopping carts" in online shops, etc.
Some sites use cookies as a means of transferring login and encrypted password between pages (less secure solution) or crafted login information (secure solution), so that it is not necessary to log in on every subpage. Disabling cookies often makes it impossible to log in, which can be solved by storing login data on the server side, but the user must always be identified in some way (e.g. through the session ID contained in the URL).
Blocking cookies
All modern browsers allow you to enable or disable the cookie mechanism (it is usually enabled by default).
Information on how to change the cookie settings of individual browsers is available on the following pages:
